Sarah Owen, Labour's parliamentary candidate in Hastings and Rye, is writing to the fishing minister, and will continue to work with Maria Eagle and Labour’s DEFRA team, to secure a fairer deal for our fishermen.
The under 10m fishing fleets won a court order for a fairer share of the quotas but they are still waiting for the coalition government to put the new quotas in place.
Earlier this month Defra announced new fishing quotas but this will not help the smaller fleets to get the share they deserve.
Sarah said, “Our smaller fishing fleets are not only vital to the local economy in Hastings and Rye, but are also vastly more sustainable and better for the environment than the big fishing organisations.
“These increases in fishing quotas from the EU will mean nothing to them if this Government doesn’t hand over a fairer share of the total quota to our smaller under 10 metre fishing fleets.
“The under 10m fishing fleets won the court order for this to happen, but sadly the coalition government haven’t acted on it. “
